The forgetting
Working a corporate job doesn’t feel natural to me. Sitting at my desk in the corner of the room while the whole world exists just outside the window. Listening to leaders read from the same script every other company seems to follow. It feels fake.
I often think, I’m not meant to be doing this.
But it’s what you’re told to do.
You go to college. You major in something that will make you money. You climb the ladder from there. That’s life.
I try to bring the outside in. I decorate with plants. Keep photos of my family nearby. Create art to hang on the wall in front of me. My calendar is covered in flowers. I wear my Joshua Tree shirt and start my day.
The remembering
During lunch, I step into my yard.
I feel the sun on my skin. Watch birds fly overhead. Listen to the wind chimes move with the breeze. The sun feels good for the first fifteen minutes, then I move into the shade.
I get closer to the Pink Powder Puff plants and watch as a colony of bees pollinates the whole thing. The hummingbirds zoom in to get their fair share. I clear away the fallen leaves and notice bugs living in the dirt below.
There’s an entire ecosystem right outside my door.

The truth
When I’m out there, I feel called to stay. To observe. To care for what’s growing. To move slower.
Outside, I feel a sense of belonging that doesn’t require effort or explanation. No distractions. No performance. Just the beauty of a world where everything depends on each other.
I feel truly present out there. Connected to something older and steadier than anything happening on my screen. We are meant to be outside, living with our Mother Earth.
A Pause
How have we strayed so far away from what we once were?
Think about this:
- When did you first feel most yourself outside?
- What falls away when you’re in nature?
- Are you going outside to escape life or to return to it?
